Clans of the Forest Cat Creator & Customization

The clans of the forest cat creator is the most visible system in the game - two of the ten official Steam screenshots are the customization screen. It offers millions of possible combinations, covering fur patterns, colours, tails, whiskers, ears, eyes and markings, and separate colours for each eye. The cat you build also changes as it ages, picking up scars on the way.

  • Millions of combinations across fur, patterns, markings, sorting, eyes, tails, whiskers and ears
  • Separate eye colours are a control in their own right, so mismatched eyes are a supported look
  • Your cat ages visually - from a cute apprentice to a grizzled veteran
  • Stylized scars appear with age, and there is a settings toggle to turn them off
  • There are no classes - the player is locked to the warrior path, so this is the whole of your visual progression system

The itemised creator feature list is on the publisher's game page; the Steam store page only promises "millions of possible customization combinations". The ageing, scars and no-classes decisions come from the IGN interview with the developers. The pack contents are itemised on the Prophecy Pack page.

What can you customize?

The publisher's feature description lists fur patterns, colours, tails, whiskers, ears, eyes and markings; the store page claims millions of possible combinations. The screenshot the game ships with shows the actual panel structure: a left rail of categories - fur, pattern, markings, sorting, eye and separate eye colours - with a swatch grid underneath and a live preview of the cat beside it.

"Separate eye colours" being its own category is the detail that generates the most obvious customisation options, and it is visible on the official screenshots in the game's own store page. If you want the practical version of how this works, treat the creator as a layered editor: base coat first, then pattern and markings, then the eye pass, with sorting available as its own control.

Does your cat change as it gets older?

Yes, and this is the part of the creator most worth knowing before you spend time on it. The developers describe it as the cat starting out as a cute apprentice and eventually looking like a grizzled veteran who has seen too many badgers. The ageing is visible on the model, not just a stat line.

That framing also explains the rest of the system. A cat that ages is a cat whose appearance is partly a record of the run behind it, which is a different proposition from picking a look once and never seeing it change. Combined with the procedurally generated characters the store page mentions, appearance and playthrough are tied together in this game in a way most character creators are not.

Can you turn the scars off?

Yes. The cat accumulates stylized visual scars as it ages, and the developers added a settings toggle to switch scars on or off. They are stylized rather than graphic, and the game is rated Everyone 10+ for fantasy violence, so this is an accessibility and comfort decision rather than a content warning.

It is worth making the decision deliberately. If scars are part of what makes an aged cat look like a veteran to you, leave them on. If you would rather your cat stay unblemished through a long run, the toggle is there, and it is a real setting rather than a promise.

Can you play as a Medicine Cat?

No. There are no classes in this game, and the player is locked into the warrior path. Medicine Cats appear in the story, but you cannot play one. The developers explained the reasoning directly: the emotional climax across all four Sagas relies on you standing at the head of your Clan.

That is the whole of the class question, and it is a closed one. There is no Medicine Cat build, no medic variant of the campaign, and no unlockable class - which is also why you will not find a classes or tier guide for this game, and why the only progression system worth documenting in detail is the creator you are reading about.

What do the packs add to the cat creator?

Two official add-ons touch this system. The Prophecy Pack, which ships with the Feral Edition, adds 8 cat-creator accessories and 12 wearable accessories, plus a cel-shaded character skin, four cat poses for photo mode and four photo mode effects. The Purrfect Look Pack, the pre-order bonus, adds a puffy tail, intense eyes, lightning-bolt-shaped whiskers, a unique fur pattern and a set of distinctive ears.

Neither is a Feral Edition exclusive in the way the name might suggest - the pre-order pack is included with digital pre-purchases of either edition. Our pre-order bonus page covers the eligibility rules and the deadline, and the editions and price page covers what each edition costs and whether the Prophecy Pack can be bought separately.

Tip
Build your cat last, or build it twice

Because the cat visibly ages, the apprentice you design at the start is not the cat you are looking at twenty hours in. Designing with the ageing in mind - rather than trying to preserve a fresh apprentice look forever - is the difference between a creator you are happy with and one you end up restarting.
